“Beyond Rising” Offers Summer Jobs for Undocumented Migrant Students
La Voce Di New York
Non-profit initiatives are providing essential opportunities for immigrant youths that would traditionally be shut out of the system
Yanira Rivera, a 19-year-old honors student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, struggled to find summer employment due to her undocumented status. Despite her academic achievements, she faced significant restrictions, leading to frustration and a loss of hope. Rivera’s situation improved when she found Beyond Rising, a five-week summer internship program for undocumented youth in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, run by the nonprofit Oyate Group. The program, serving 50 participants this summer, has seen a surge in demand, with 1,800 applications compared to 500 last year. Participants earn $500 for 30 hours of work per week, offering both financial support and a sense of value. As demand for such opportunities grows, programs like Beyond Rising are essential for providing undocumented youth with much-needed employment options.
