Bronx Food Delivery Program Holds Event For Seniors, NYCHA Residents
BLACK STAR NEWS
The Bronx Rising Initiative, a program of the nonprofit Oyate Group, is dedicated to providing critical resources in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s disproportionate impact on the Bronx. The initiative has been successful in vaccinating over 20,000 people across the borough through various efforts, including door-to-door outreach in NYCHA housing to combat vaccine hesitancy and hosting pop-up vaccine sites at community centers, schools, and busy streets. In addition to their vaccination efforts, the Bronx Rising Initiative has launched a food insecurity initiative to address the pressing need for food access caused by the pandemic, economic hardships, and food deserts. The program, in partnership with GrowNYC and community leader Emmanuel Martinez, kicked off the Fresh Food Fest delivery program by providing fresh, local produce to NYCHA’s Bailey Houses residents. The initiative will continue delivering food to those in need, with a particular focus on seniors and families living in NYCHA housing. As part of their food insecurity initiative, the Bronx Rising Initiative has also donated $20,000 to support Graham Windham’s food insecurity initiatives, providing almost 800 bags of food to those they serve through the end of the year.
