Brandon Hendricks Scholarship applications are now open
Oyate Group, a Bronx-based anti-poverty nonprofit known for its Bronx Rising Initiative, has announced its third annual scholarship for high school seniors from the Bronx attending college in the fall.
The Brandon Hendricks Scholarship offers $5,000 scholarships to 10 Bronx seniors to be used at the winners’ discretion toward their college education. Applications will be accepted through May 31.
The scholarship was created in 2020 in honor of Brandon Hendricks, a local rising star who was the victim of senseless gun violence in June of that year. Before his passing, he had recently been accepted to college with a full scholarship. The Oyate Group is dedicated to emulating his passion and drive to give back to his community through the scholarship.
“Our brilliant youth across the Bronx deserve the opportunity to go to college and bring their passion and education back to their communities, without going into debt to do so,” said Tomas Ramos, founder, president and CEO of the Oyate Group. “Through this scholarship, we hope to carry out Brandon Hendrick’s aspirations to positively impact his community and inspire a new generation of Bronx leaders.”
Over the two years the scholarship has been available to Bronx students, 15 passionate young Bronx residents have been awarded $5,000 each. Last year, the scholarship was awarded to 10 young women who are currently attending Brown University, New York University, University at Albany, Le Moyne College, Stony Brook University, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Morgan State University, Hunter College and SUNY Sullivan.
Winners will be announced in early July.
The only requirements to apply are to be high school seniors from the Bronx and to have recently been accepted to college. Applications include written statements on Brandon Hendricks’ impact and how the applicants hope to make positive change for their community.
