Undocumented students thrive in rare paid summer internship opportunity through Bronx nonprofit
BronxTimes
Beyond Rising, a Bronx-based internship program by the Oyate Group, offers paid internships to undocumented high school and college students. This summer, 50 participants earn $500 weekly while gaining job skills, forming social connections, and building a professional network. Since starting in 2022, interest has surged, with 1,800 applications for 50 spots this year.
The program places students in various institutions, including BronxNet and local colleges, performing tasks like administrative work, research, and social media design. Students also participate in mentorship, field trips, and arts activities.
Undocumented students aged 16 to 20 in New York City can apply. Participants, such as Beatriz and Isatou, have found the program crucial for their growth and career aspirations. Coordinators praise the interns’ motivation and impact, highlighting their contributions and the positive effect on the institutions involved.
