UPDATE Applications Open for Brandon Hendricks Scholarship as Mayor, NYPD Say Decline in Shootings Continues
Norwood News
Applications are now open for the Brandon Hendricks Scholarship, offering $20,000 to two college-bound high school seniors from The Bronx. Sponsored by Oyate Group, this scholarship was created in 2020 to honor Brandon Hendricks, a promising basketball player who was tragically killed in a shooting just before starting college.
Beyond financial support, the scholarship includes a mentorship program, where past recipients guide new scholars. Brandon’s mother, Eve Hendricks, remains active in the fight against gun violence, calling for change in The Bronx.
Gun violence in NYC has seen a significant decline, with shootings in The Bronx down 29.2% from last year. Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch credit this to increased law enforcement efforts, including the removal of 1,000 illegal guns this year alone.
Oyate Group continues its work to uplift the community through youth mentorship, small business support, and programs aimed at reducing poverty and violence.
The deadline to apply for the Brandon Hendricks Scholarship is March 31, 2025.
