Guyanese author Rajiv Mohabir reads newest book for first time in NYC
Caribbean Life
On October 13, Oyate Group, an anti-poverty nonprofit, hosted the launch of Rajiv Mohabir’s new poetry book, “Whale Aria.” This collection delves into themes of immigration, queerness, and race through the lens of humpback whales. Originally set to attend in person, Mohabir had to read via Zoom due to a COVID-19 infection. It marked the first live reading of “Whale Aria” in NYC. The event also featured Guyanese poet Will Depoo and author Liz Jaikaran, who respectively shared poems about immigrant rights, women’s rights, and stories about the Indo-Caribbean experience. Oyate Group, established in 2020 by Tomas Ramos, focuses on empowering underserved communities in NYC by offering various initiatives, including the Bronx Rising Initiative.
